Cover Me

Any discussion about "best covers of all time" would not be complete without Stevie Ray Vaughan's incendiary cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)". The cover is so amazing that it borders on fact - this is one of the greatest covers of all time.

Stevie Ray Vaughan's cover brings into question what makes a great cover. When doing a cover, a great artist usually straddles the ultra-thin like of being loyal to the song source, but putting their own distinct stamp on the track. The best example I can think of off the top of my head is the Cowboy Junkies beguiling cover of "Sweet Jane".

With "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)", Stevie Ray Vaughan walks that line impeccably. First off, he has the courage to even try to do a cover of a song of that magnitude. Then, he incorporates years of being raised by BB King and Albert Collins records in addition to his own brother's guitar work (Jimmie Vaughan). In fact, no words do this cover justice. Just watch.
